We had such an incredible day at Iglesia Los Girasoles! This was a large school and church, so we were able to diagnose and treat so many children and teachers. To set the scene, picture the sound of kids laughing, playing, and greeting us as we unloaded the vans. It was a very welcoming and sweet entrance to say the least. We weren’t even sure we were going to be able to treat everyone, but God gave us the perfect amount of time to see everyone coming to clinic.
At the med station, we were able to identify afib in a patient with our portable 6 lead EKG. We also saw more URIs, GERD, otitis externa, and educated our patients on preventative medicine strategies, such as good diet and exercise. We even got to use an ultrasound machine to rule out a wrist fracture.
At physical therapy, we got to teach one of our patients how to recruit certain muscles for breathing to reduce the tension they were putting on the front of their neck. Our patients also came to us with knee pain, a subluxed shoulder after CVA, low back pain (we are seeing this is a trend in PT!), and upper extremity pain with some nerve involvement causing tingling to go all the way down their arm (so we did a lot of nerve glides today!). All of the patients that came to us were very kind and excited to do their exercises, which was a huge win to experience that. One guy was SUPER motivated to get better and do chores after a stroke, so we are very excited to think about the progress he will continue to make.
Another really special part of today was seeing many people from the church we were having clinic in. It was a neat opportunity to get to see the love they have for their community and pray for them. Some of them even prayed for us in our stations!
Truly what a blessing today was! This community was filled with joy from the Lord, which was so inspiring! We do not want to take any moment for granted. We are learning so much, experiencing God’s love in a very new and exciting way, and getting to share that with everyone coming into our clinics. Please continue to pray for this community and for them to have all of the resources they need to continue the work they are doing. And please pray for us as we prepare for our final day of clinic tomorrow!
